Hum/Rowswell/Walkington

Alto saxophonist Dan Rowswell, pianist Peter Hum and bassist Alec Walkington took their baby steps together as jazz musicians in high school in Ottawa more than three decades ago. They were part of an award-winning sextet in the late 1980s that won the Lowenbrau Jazz Search in Montreal and competed in the Montreal International Jazz Festival's battle of the bands. But the last time the three of them were on stage together was in the early 1990s. Come out for their reunion gig, as Dan Rowswell makes the trip from PEI and Alec Walkington makes the trip from Montreal to play with Peter Hum at his favourite jazz haunt. The trio will play some blasts from their past, only better than they used to do, and some selections from Peter's 2010 CD, A Boy's Journey. Downbeat at 19:00 till 22:00. Entertainment fee 3$ diners 5$ non-diners.

The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble are a group of eight brothers whose father, trumpeter Phil Cohran, has been a leader in the Chicago jazz scene from the 1960s through today. Still performing today, Cohran was a teacher and composer for the Sun Ra Arkestra, Earth Wind & Fire, and Chaka Khan, and led the group Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM). He taught all of his children music from a young age, and Hypnotic, growing up on Chicago's South side, went on to combine the urgency of Hip Hop, the heritage of Jazz, and the soul of Chicago into a completely unique sound they call 'Now Music'.
Having performed together all of their lives Hypnotic's performances bring an unmatched level of energy and sophistication to the stage. They have been sought out for collaborations by some of the world's most popular musicians including Tony Allen, Femi Kuti, Gorillaz, Mos Def, Erykah Badu, De La Soul, and most recently, Prince.
